My sculpting technique starts with fragments of clay. With a gesture of my hand each fragment is formed into a rolled coil joining additional coils to build up the piece. Relying solely on my hands as tools the clay is delicately modeled with my thumb and forefinger infusing the clay as I go with emotional qualities and movement.
My experience of forming clay is distinctly sensory. The making process is rhythmical and therapeutic. I enjoy the feeling of the soft clay yielding to my touch. My goal is to allow the softness of the clay that exists during the forming of a sculpture to be apparent in the finished piece. The fluid of the clay at the moment of its creation captured and contained in the fired structure.
After forming, the piece is left alone to dry, then it is placed in a kiln and slowly brought to 2,000 degrees with propane fuel. It is then finished with paints. -Janie
